December 2011 Update

Since our last report Quest is virtually complete and is just awaiting a fresh coat of paint. There is just the small matter of a couple of tears in the mainsail to be attended to.
Undine has now had the centre board fitted, having been scrubbed off, galvanised and painted. For many years we have discussed replacing the lifting arm, which was a long iron bar with what looked like an old-fashioned loo cistern handle at the end. In the lifted position it lay along the centre board casing, and you couldn’t sit on a vertical iron bar. We now have a cable and pulley system, which is much better. We still need to rely on an outboard for power. If only we could find a suitable inboard, the Stuart Turner having resisted all efforts to get it going reliably.
We have now started on Activist, the ex-Outward Bound 26 ft. ketch. The shattered sheer strake has been replaced, and new frames are being laminated up, prior to replacing quite a few of the planks. Then the transom will need some attention, and a few rusty fittings will be replaced. We earnestly hope that she will be on the water next season.
We still have a half-finished Tenby Lugger in the shed. We are trying to set up a funded project to restore it, but funding bodies will not consider us until we have a secure base wherein to locate it. Our future in our present location is very unsure, due to the proposed Martello Quays development, so we are looking at other possible sites to move to. If there is any light at the end of the tunnel it is a long way off. A fairy godmother would be very welcome.
We do have a programme of extra-mural activities. We have attended, and displayed, at the annual archaeological Day School at the College, and we have a series of evening talks arranged. We shall be taking part next year in some local water-based events, such as the Pembroke Rally and the Fishguard Sea Festival. Also Seafair Haven will happen next year, organised by Tall Ships Wales, with our support. The land-based events will be in a slightly lower key, due to lack of money, but the boats will be on the water just the same, in, we hope, impressive numbers.
An important aspect of the Society's mission is to disseminate the West Wales Maritime Heritage Story through the attendance at shore based events, and in respect of this, the Society participated in the planning of the Annual Conference of Morol, the Institute of Welsh Maritime Studies, an all Wales organisation, which took place at St Dogmaels on Saturday 5 November.
. Here the Society members mounted an interpretative display which proved popular with visitors. To further this aim, the Society organises a series of talks through the winter, details of which will be found on the Society's web site, and also can be obtained by contacting the Chairman by phone on 01646 663819 or email davidreed456@btinternet.com

Cruise up the Pembroke River with the Steamboat Association

On Wednesday 27th July we sailed up the Pembroke River into the Castle Pond with 2 boats from the Steamboat Association, where we were met by the Mayor of Pembroke.

The road to Blackpool Mill is closed for work to drainage culverts. Therefore the Library will not be accessible until after the first May Bank Holiday.
After that date, to visit the library, telephone Joe Rielly to arrange a date and time.
You may also request books from either the on-line catalogue or the copy in the workshop. I will bring them to the yard for your collection and you may return them at the yard. This policy change is because the number of visitors using the library on open days averages 2, this does not make it worthwhile for librarians to sit for 4 hour sessions. Undine takes the plunge!

Undine has entered the water for the first time in over 5 years, with predictable results, David and I just managed to row her from slipway to dock before getting too wet!! the engine is not fitted and is unrepairable, so we shall sail her when she plims up.

Proposed ‘No Anchor/Mooring’ zone

Mark has asked that I circulate the attached to you for comment from MHHUA.

The Haven holds a number of habitats, species and environments requiring protection as features of the Pembrokeshire Marine SAC. Two such features which are known to be extremely sensitive to damage by disturbance of the fundus are the Zostera and Red Maerl beds in the lower reaches of the estuary.

In order to safeguard these features, in line with the management of the SAC, it has been proposed that ‘No Anchor/Mooring’ zones should be implemented in areas of particular susceptibility. Attached is a draft chartlet showing the two areas (bordered and shaded red) which have been proposed.

I would be grateful if you would indicate a time scale in which you would be able to gain and forward comment from MHHUA members so I can advise Mark. Any forthcoming comments can then be address either to me or directly to Mark. If you need additional or electronic copies of the chartlet please let me know.

13 society members undertook an arduous trip on Quest to the upper reaches of the Cresswell river. Fortunatley they stumbled on a pub,this was a great comfort as the voyage had lasted many minutes. Children tripped over themselves to assist in tying up this ancient vessel with it's historic crew. Spirits were soon revived and we sped off back to where we came from arriving back on Quests mooring just as darkness fell. Unfortunately when we got back to the slip at Llannion Supporters trailer was under water! Oops! By the time she was recovered and returned to the yard and Joe & Margaret got home it was after 11pm.

Hive of activity at the yard today peparing for the Pembroke Festival on Saturday.
Quest and General picton are out on moorings. Rosyth is moored on the mud to plim up.Duckling and Supporter in the shed ready to go!!

Stuart C finally got Quest's engine to go- Duff fuel, looked like diesel but didn't smell and we thought we had petrol - Beware Asda garage!!!

WWMHS among the Bretons!
Semaine du Golfe 2009

For four strenuous, but enjoyable and fascinating days, the Society formed part of Milford Haven Port Authority’s ‘Seafair Haven 2010’ delegation to the Semaine du Golfe Festival centred on the Golfe du Morbihan, on the west coast of Brittany. One of the leading maritime festivals of France, Semaine du Golfe takes place biannually attracting large numbers of traditional craft with crowds gathering on the quayside at Vannes, particularly in late afternoon and evening when the various classes of vessels made their way into port after a day under sail or oar in the land–locked Golfe. A carnival atmosphere certainly stretched well into the night, especially the final night.

Centred in the ‘Welsh Village’, our exhibition, together with boat building demonstrations from Mitec, the Atlantic Challenge Gig Display, Pembrokeshire Tourist Information, and Welsh traditional musicians attracted crowds of appreciative visitors. The purpose was to tell the story of our Haven to whet the appetite of our hosts to encourage them to cross ‘La Manche’ for Seafair Haven 2010. We were officially welcomed by members of the Conseil General du Morbihan and City of Vannes, while on the following evening, Bob Clarke leader of the Welsh Delegation welcomed our hosts at a reception and buffet with Welsh delicacies most ably and professionally produced by a small but versatile team with only limited facilities in the marquee.

Our display drew considerable interest from locals and visitors alike - Breton, French the UK and from further afield. Amongst a variety of enquiries, the publisher of the popular French maritime publication ‘Chasee Maree’ [Tide Chaser?] made a point of visiting our ‘stand’, and invited our Secretary to provide an article for his journal, while the Chairman was sought out by a lecturer of Cornish extraction from Rennes University to discuss aspects of the Cornish fishing industry for his MPhil, and both were approached by a representative from a maritime heritage group from Plougerne on the north coast of Brittany [or Breizh to the Bretons] seeking to develop links between the two organisations.

We travelled a considerable distance to attend Semaine du Golfe, and being an exhibitor based on the quayside in Cannes restricted us to the port of Vannes itself, but being involved was well worthwhile. The enthusiasm and dedication of the Bretons was a salutary lesson in demonstrating what can be done to promote an appreciation of a community’s maritime past. In addition, our display would have given potential participants from Brittany to Seafair next year an introduction to the wealth of heritage they could explore in our home waters; perhaps, unsurprisingly, it soon became apparent that quite a number of our continental visitors had little knowledge where Wales was situated, let alone the location of Milford Haven .

Last but not least, what struck me was the comaraderie between all involved, and the willingness to support each other when under pressure, while another pleasant memory was the constant welcome supply of cups of tea provided by the hard-working ‘Catering Department’ - it was very hot in the marquee in the brilliant sunshine, especially after midday. Our thanks go out to Richard James, David Griffin and Diane Harries for all they did in organising this successful ‘Invasion of France’ or to be more accurate, the renewal of friendship between two Celtic Nation, for we were most warmly received by this Breton community. Any drawbacks? – well, perhaps setting out for home on the final day at 3.00am for the long coach and ferry journey home!

A lot of action in the yard yesterday, Feverishly painting Quest getting ready for her spring launch, under Joe's supervision. All credit to Jem for crawling underneath to do the antifoul!

Also David was busy trying to rescue the library from the rising damp in shed2.

A landmark was reached in the restoration of Linnet, construcion work was finished with the fitting of the stem plate and I rigged upthe mast and hoisted the sail to celebrate! All it needs now is sanding and painting.

We had a first look at the Tideway dinghy we've just been given, a promising project if we have space.
